Hi All! I am looking at a lot of websites that examine what ESS is and I liked this one: ESS in a Nutshell
You've probably seen it already, but it helped me to begin to formulate a definition for ESS.

"At the highest level, the four basic elements of the Earth system can be represented as air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), land (geosphere) and life (biosphere)" I like this. Definitive.
Yeah, it helped me wrap my mind around a huge concept. I also liked the idea of integration of disciplines and the human impact component as discussed on the site.
